AN ASSESSMENT OF TAXATION ISSUES AND STRATEGIES IN GOVERNMENTAL ACCOUNTING
Abstract
This study assesses the taxation issues and strategies in governmental accounting, focusing on the challenges of tax collection, compliance, and revenue generation. The objectives are to identify major taxation challenges, to evaluate the effectiveness of current tax strategies, and to propose improvements for enhancing tax administration. A survey research design was used to collect data from government tax officials and accountants. The sample size of 370 was determined using Taro Yamane's formula from a population of 170,000, ensuring a representative sample. The case study was conducted in Port Harcourt, known for its significant economic activities and tax base. The reliability coefficient score of the survey instrument was 0.87, reflecting high reliability. Findings indicate that while tax strategies have improved revenue generation, challenges such as tax evasion and administrative inefficiencies remain. The study recommends the adoption of advanced tax administration technologies and continuous training for tax officials to enhance compliance and efficiency in tax collection.
